MPhil in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence

Yuriko completed the course in 2021.  She is currently working as a Research Assistant at the Department of Engineering in Cambridge.

What was your background before starting the MPhil?
I studied Information Science at Tokyo University of Science in Japan

What did you get out of the course?
The course gave me a broad grounding in multiple aspects of machine learning and further developed my programming skills. Furthermore, it exposed me to a more international environment.

What were the highlights?
The highlight of my year was, without doubt, the research project I did for my final dissertation under the guidance of Professor Richard E Turner, and with help from PhD students.

What have you gone on to do after the course and what are your longer-term plans?
I am currently working as a Research Assistant on a self-driving car project (to develop continual learning with novelty detection algorithms) with Professor Richard E. Turner. In the longer term I am particularly keen to explore how machine learning can contribute to society and not only address business challenges.

What advice would you give to people applying for the course?

This is a very challenging field, and is continuously changing. Anyone applying should be prepared to tackle a diverse set of problems and most of all bring energy and enthusiasm. In your application, be positive and emphasise your skills and achievements whatever the field.

What advice would you give to people taking the course?
If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to ask for help. Regardless of the final outcome this will be an unforgettable experience.
